Ancient Egypt, Babylonian and Assyrian style
Because of an even, warm climate, the garments of the Egyptians were made of cotton and linen. The first and principal garment of the men was the schenti, or loin cloth, which was a long scarf wrapped around the hips and held in place by a tied belt.
Women wore a straight, narrow-sheath gown, which hung from under the breasts to the ankles and was held up by either a single shoulder strap, or one on each shoulder. The upper body remained uncovered. Only members of the upper class wore a cape which came down to the elbows and was gathered into crossways folds. The shift form kalasiris appeared later was worn by both sexes in many different ways. It was worn loose or belted, and was usually transparent and finely pleated.
The costumes of the Babylonians and the Assyrians consisted of two garments a straight tunic edged with fringe, either long or short, called the candys, and a fringed shawl of varying dimensions. Linen was used, but the principal fabric seems to have been wool.
