Trend
A trend is a general direction or movement. For example, you will of- ten read in fashion magazines "there is a trend toward longer skirts", it eans that several designers, in- cluding some leading ones, are showing longer skirts, leading retail- ers are buying them, and fash- ion-forward customers are wearing them. It is often difficult to tell a trend from a fad; even the experts get caught. The brief life of the "Evita look" of the late 1990's revealed it to be a fad rather than a trend , to the sorrow of manufacturers and retailers stuck with unsaleable goods. The picture is further complicated by the adjective "trendy", which can mean either very fashionable, or faddish.
