    Byzantine style(300--1400AD)

Byzantine costume revealed both Greco-Roman and Oriental influence, combining Roman drapery with the gorgeousness of the East, in heavy silk, damasks, brocades and cloth of gold. Due to the Christian religion, the body was now entirely concealed. Both sexes wore a long, straight tunic with long sleeves. Men of quality draped themselves in a rich mantle or dalmatique, reminiscent of Roman toga, semicircular in shape. On the left front edge was placed the clavus, insignia of high dignitaries. It was a large decoration, rectangular in shape, fashioned of jewels and gold embroidery. Women wore over their tunic a stola or palla, using a fold of the palla as head covering. Men and women fastened their mantales on the right shoulder with a gorgeous jeweled fibula or clasp.
