    500BC--400AD
The feminine of ancient Romans wore stola and pa/la. The male principal garment of ancient Romans was the toga. Its use was the same as that of the Greek himation, but it different in shape, a semicircle. It was much larger, heavier and complicated. The or-dinary citizen wore a plain white toga. Magistrates, priests and boys up to sixteen years old of the upper class wore the purple bordered toga. The embroidered purple toga worn with the gold embroidered tunic was the ceremonial dress of magistrates and generals and became the traditional costume of emperors.
Both sexes wore a tunic corresponding to the Greek chiton, underneath the toga or palla. Under that, men and women wore an undergarment reaching to the knees, similar to a shirt. Over the undertunic, women wore the stola, a long, straight robe reaching to the feet. A wide purple band called clavus, insignia of rank, ornamented center front from neck to hem, of the senator's tunic. The tunic of the knight bore narrow bands. The feminine tunic often had an embroidered band at the neck and hem. Originally the gar-ments were made of natural colored wool with decorated edges. Later, more showy and colorful garments were favored.
