The professional apparel designer must completely understand the raw ma- terials that will be incorporated into the final product to best serve the consumer's needs. Five elements are involved in the production of fabrics: fibers, yarns, structure, color, and finish. Fibers are usually twisted together and spun into yarns. Yarns are either woven or knit to form a fabric. Color is added to enhance the fabric's appeal and a finish is applied to make the fabric suitable for its intended use.
It is important for a designer to understand that each of these elements provides the fabric with certain basic characteristics or roperties. If any part is changed, the result would be a different fabric perhaps making it unsuitable for the specific end use. For example, blending or combining two or more fibers, characteristics of each may be achieved in a single fabric. A blend of cotton and polyester provides the wearer the coolness of cotton and the ease of laundering of the polyester.
