Tremendous developments were made in the clothing industry due to haute couture being converted into wearable fashion and made accessible to all levels of society. Po- sition in society was underlined by clothing. The fashion trends for women began to change from season to season. Slim skirt, narrow waist and styled hips were the ele- gant, feminine fashions. Skirt hems rose from the calf to below the knee. Silhouettes were labeled by letters or shapes. Typical examples were the pencil line, tulip line, Yline and Empire line. The youthful, swinging styles were typified by X line with a princess cut, cupola and balloon line with bouncing skirts and petticoats, and also the flared trapeze and A lines. Emphasis on the hips, a fluid waist line and blouse-like top were the features of the H line and wave line. Apart from sports and leisure clothing, a separate and uncomplicated fashion developed for the younger generation based on knits, cords, and leather clothing but, most of all, the popularization of blue jeans. Fashion was modeled on film stars and pop idols; many of the trends came from the USA. The sack line was a completed the figure loose cut which concealed the figure and later developed into the barrel line. Men's clothing remained conventional. Jacket and coat had a wide cut, broad padded shoulders and no waist. The trousers were comfortably wide at top and became narrower toward the bottom.
