Space travel and abstract art brought a futuristic fashion with geometric patterns and designs in black and white, white and silver. New types of materials such as plastic film and coated fabrics appeared. Dresses and coats in the trapeze line stressed contrasting trimmings and clearly defined seams. Trousers with extremely wide flares appeared. Hot pants, maxi-coats and the transparent look were unusual variants. The anti-fashion movement "hippy" also influenced the fashion scene. The deliberately careless "dropout" look was against the conventional style of dress. Young people were allowed to adopt uncon- ventional clothing styles.
